5 Ceiling Design Mistakes to Avoid, According to Interior Designers

Robert M. Luckey July 22, 2022 3 min read

When designing your living space or even a single room in particular, you rarely sit down to think about the design of the ceiling. Which is completely normal. It’s a permanent fixture in the room, and it’s not the easiest part to refresh or incorporate. You may also feel like this space doesn’t really impact your space. Let your paint color and your décor get all the attention. However, that’s not really true. It’s actually a very influential part of your space. But to start perfecting your ceiling space, you first need to know what ceiling design mistakes to avoid.

The ceiling is actually a very influential part of your space

You might be thinking: how bad can I really mess up a ceiling? Trust us, sometimes a ceiling can make or break a room’s design. Since this is the highest point in the room, it radiates grandeur. The ceiling is the perfect canvas on which to get creative. However, before letting your creativity run wild, it is first important to understand what you should avoid when it comes to ceiling design.

#Popcorn ceiling

Popcorn ceilings are a thing of the past, as they should be. For some reason, people loved putting popcorn caps everywhere. Perhaps to spice up the ceiling space. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not the best design choice. So, it’s time to get rid of this retro classic. According to the designers, such ceilings are unattractive and outdated. And if you’re planning to redecorate and refresh your space, it’s time to knock down that ceiling.

#Excess recessed lights

Recessed lights are an easy choice when it comes to ceiling light fixtures. However, space can quickly become full of holes. While these lights light up rooms well without being overly intrusive, they don’t work for all spaces. Sometimes it’s best to avoid making a bunch of holes in your ceiling and instead have a focal point of light next to some which may be floor lamps.

#Solid Colors

You don’t really have to stick to white or beige when it comes to ceiling paint colors. While calling for such shades and tints makes sense, designers urge us not to forget about other color options. Think of the ceiling as another wall. You can always opt for colors of white tones, however, let yourself play. If your ceiling is sloped, for example, you can paint your ceiling the same color as the walls or your floor.

#Height proportions

Height proportions are an important aspect of design. For example, if your ceiling is low, you want to avoid adding large, bulky light fixtures, as they will make the space cramped. However, if your ceiling is high and tall, you will need tall decor, such as large windows. It creates a balance. Choose your decor and lighting according to proportions.

#Acoustic

People often overlook room acoustics. And the ceiling plays a big part in it. If you are designing a room that you will use as a media room, for recording, or even just watching TV, you may need to insulate it properly. This will help reduce noise.
